During the 18th century, the Italian style had an influence upon musical production in Liège, affecting both instrumental and vocal music. The establishment in 1699 of the Collège Liégois in Rome was to play a significant part in this process of cultural importation.
Herman-François Delange, scholarships from the Darchis Foundation, was to exemplify this musical development. Particularly drawn to the Neapolitan school, he introduced its expressivity and its melodic colours to the prince-bishopric and so contributed to the establishment there of a typically Neapolitan Italianate style. He leaved us a body of work in the galant style with refined and pleasant melodies, modestly defining a bridge between the old baroque style and the advent of classicism. His few surviving works display a real talent and establish Delange as a significant figure in the development of chamber music in Belgium.

Fondé en 1997 par la flûtiste Isabelle Lamfalussy, l’Ensemble Solstice - à géométrie variable - explore avec bonheur le répertoire allant du baroque tardif au début du romantisme. Découvert parmi les trésors enfouis dans la bibliothèque du Conservatoire de Liège (Fond Terry), l’œuvre du Liégeois Herman-François Delange (1715-1781) fait aujourd’hui l’objet d’un vaste projet d’enregistrements, à commencer par le présent groupe de sonates pour flûte, violon, et basse continue (première mondiale). Claires structures préclassiques, esprit de fantaisie, virtuosité et ornements attestent l’influence italienne dont le compositeur se revendiquait et que traduisent avec élégance les interprètes. L'ensemble belge Solstice a eu la bonne idée de réveiller Herman-François Delange (1715-1781), musicien liégeois parti étudier à Rome puis à Naples avant de revenir s'établir en violoniste et compositeur sur les bords de Meuse. Première mondiale pour cet enregistrement des Sonate a tre, musique galante qui se profile dans un ton mozartien tout en faisant toujours sienne la volubilité baroque. Ce qui convient idéalement aux couleurs des instruments anciens d'Isabelle Lamfalussy, excellente flûtiste, et à ses amis de Solstice, tout en limpidité raffinée et nerveuse.
